Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Detailed information about infectious diseases and injuries, chronic conditions such as asthma, and travel to foreign countries. The site is strong in statistics pertaining to public health.

National Institutes of Health
It gives detailed information about diseases and conditions, clinical trials, and drugs. It also contains and links to general information on wellness topics.

healthfinder ®
MEDLINEplus ®
Both of these sites are sponsored by different agencies of the federal government. Both have dictionaries, encyclopedias, news, information by topic, and links to information about prescription drugs. Healthfinder is less technical and has a stronger emphasis on lifestyle and wellness issues. MEDLINEplus is more structured and has more links but is still accessible to lay users.

MayoClinic.com
In addition to information arranged by disease or condition, the site has "Healthy Living Centers" for information about topics that emphasize self-care and wellness, such as senior health, working life, and pain management. Among other features: "Ask a Specialist" answers questions from readers of the Mayo Clinic's newsletter. "Health Decision Guides" helps a user decide among treatment alternatives.

WebMD
Has information about insurance plans and benefits as well as medical conditions, symptoms, wellness, and prescription and nonprescription drugs.
