Kids’ Summer Reading Club

All ages through 5th grade
Registration begins June 6
Reporting: June 13 through July 31
(Readers may only report once a day)
Ahoy! Come on board for a high seas adventure – and don’t forget to pack books—for they just may lead you to the greatest treasure ever!
In between practicing your swashbuckling skills and searching desert isles, track your reading time and earn prizes for hitting specified minute markers:
Preschoolers, Kindergartners and 1st graders (Pirates):
200, 400, 600, and 800 minutes
Second through Fifth graders (Buccaneers):
300, 600, 900, and 1,200 minutes

For reaching the highest minute marker, participants will also be entered in the final prize drawing.
All readers may complete two reading logs.
Reading club rules and logs will be available beginning June 6.
All readers must report and claim their prizes no later than July 31. Winners of the final prize drawing will be be notified by phone.


Bonus #1: American Eagle Productions will perform Charlotte’s Web on Wednesday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m. at The Community House. This event is sponsored by Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills and Oak Brook libraries. Free tickets available beginning May 21.
Bonus #2: On June 6, if you sail over to the library to register for the program between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., you will receive a special treat and a balloon creation.


Singer Chris Bart

Tuesday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m., 1- to 5-year olds Chris Bart is a current stay-at-home dad who loves performing for his son’s preschool class. He can’t wait to bring his guitar here to help you sing along with some of your favorite children’s songs.
Free tickets available at the library beginning June 3.

Singer Linda Robertson

Tuesday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m., 1- to 5-year olds Join Linda for a lively concert especially for “young children and those who love them.”
Free tickets available at the library beginning July 1.

Drop-in Storytime for 1-5 year olds

Tuesdays, June 24 and July 22 From 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Parents, caregivers and little ones will listen to stories and share songs at this drop-in summer storytime program. No registration required.


Help say good-bye to Miss Barb

If you’ve been to the library during the last 20 years, you have probably had the pleasure of meeting Barbara DeLongis. After contributing countless hours to shaping and enhancing library collections, managing staff and volunteers, cheerfully performing storytime and assisting patrons, Miss Barb has decided it is time to move on to new adventures. Just as Miss Barb has touched your child’s life over the years, participating in your child’s growth has been equally rewarding for her. She has also been a wonderful colleague and friend. Miss Barb will be truly missed. Join us for a party in her honor and help us make it one she will never forget.

June 12 – Mad Science: Life in the Ocean
What is life like under the ocean's surface? What kind of animals and plants are found in the sea? Find out in this hands-on workshop about the mysteries of the deep. Tickets available beginning May 29.

June 19 – Sharks!
Learn lots of fun facts about great white sharks in South Australia, and what it is like to swim in the ocean with a 15-foot long, 3,000-pound great white shark! You will also get to see and touch a live set of shark’s jaws. Tickets available beginning June 5.

July 17 – Time for Ballet
Become a swashbuckling Puss n’ Boots or a dainty princess White Cat from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty. Christina Salerno of the Salt Creek Ballet will read the story, teach you dance steps and help you create the characters. A performance for parents will be held immediately after class. Tickets available beginning July 3.

July 24 – The Magic and Mystery of Writing
Join author Janet Riehecky as she uses magic tricks and illusions to teach you the art of writing. You will learn how to spark ideas, develop plots and create characters. Tickets available beginning July 10.

Pirate Party

Wednesday, June 25 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Join us for a day of fun as we send you on a scavenger hunt in the Youth Services Department. Find the hidden items needed for a treasure-hunting pirate adventure (from a ship to a map) and win a prize. All participants are also invited to enter a drawing for a prize basket worthy of a great sea captain. No registration required.

80th Anniversary Celebration of Memorial Hall

Thursday, July 3 from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
The library will take part in the village festivities. A classic book from that time, The Wizard of Oz, will be our theme. Meet Dorothy and get a balloon creation of your very own. Free books while supplies last.


We’re in the Parade – Friday, July 4

Tuesday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
First through third graders will make crystal gardens and experiment with soda pop. Each participant will take home a science kit. Registration begins April 1.


Bike Stunt Show

X-Games medalist, Matt Wilhelm, will present a bike stunt show in the North Parking Lot at Oak Brook Public Library. In addition to showing his medals and winning tricks, Matt will talk about bike safety and the importance of perseverance. While competing in the X-Games, Matt graduated Magna Cum Laude from Millikin University. Kids will be both amazed and inspired by this performance. Thank you to Oak Brook Public Library’s Youth Services staff for inviting us. Registration begins on June 25.

June 16 - Captain Cranky and His Crew: A Dave Herzog Marionette Show
This summer, join Captain Cranky as he sets sail to find the blue bird of happiness. Along the way Captain Cranky and his crew of hilarious brigands will entertain you with their special brand of puppet magic. Tickets available beginning June 2.

June 23 - A Treasure Trove of Stories
Marie Ringenberg, professional storyteller, will entertain you with tales full of fun and adventure, even some with pirates! Tickets available beginning June 9.

June 30 – Dave Rudolph’s Beach Party
Are you ready to have a great time? Do you like being silly? Singer/performer Dave Rudolph will have you on your feet as he sings, shouts, and dances his way into your hearts. Tickets available beginning June 16.

July 14 – The Balster’s Magic Show
A lighthearted show targeted for the young and young at heart. Amazing magic, comedy, audience participation and live animals are the key ingredients of this dynamic show. Tickets available beginning June 30.

July 21 – Jim Gill, Singer
Join us for an hour of fabulous singing and guitar playing with this Hinsdale Public Library favorite. He is guaranteed to entertain the whole family. Tickets available beginning July 7.


Book Buddies

Need someone to read with this summer? Join our Book Buddies program as a Junior Buddy or a Senior Buddy. Any child entering 1st or 2nd grade can partner with a teen, entering 6th grade or above, and take turns reading to one another this summer. There are four Book Buddy sessions, each lasting one week. Junior and Senior Buddies will meet three days during the week to read with each other at 10:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Buddies may sign up for more than one session, but have to be able to attend every day in the sessions they sign up for. Crack open some books this summer and bring those words to life with a friend. Anybody can be a buddy, so let’s get reading!

Search for the Missing Treasure Map - June 13 to July 31 Every morning between June 13 and July 31, the treasure map will be hidden in the Youth Services Department. The first kid to find the map and turn it in will win a small prize. Only one win per family per week allowed.
