Wireless Printing

Hinsdale Public Library is happy to be a wireless printing hotspot. You can now print documents, emails and web content from your computer or wireless device to the Library’s color or black and white printers. Visit hinsdalelibrary.info and click on the wireless printing icon. Your copies will be ready for pickup in seconds and will remain available for up to 24 hours. Black and white copies are 10 cents each and color copies are 50 cents each.

Archived Meeting Minutes

Position:        

Circulation Desk Clerk

19 hrs per week with some nights and weekend hours

$10 per hour

 Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience in public/customer service
• Computer literacy, including ability to type, use a mouse and navigate Microsoft Windows
• Ability to lift/carry/grip individual books weighing up to 20 pounds and visual acuity to read fine print and numbers
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to recall detailed policies and procedures without supervision
• Commitment to public service, including promptness and dependability

 Desired Skills:

• Library related experience preferred
• Ability to maintain a pleasant, approachable demeanor when working with the public and staff
• Ability to effectively handle patron complaints and other problems in a calm manner using independent judgment
• Ability to keyboard and file accurately and recall detailed policies and procedures.
• Ability to quickly and efficiently handle a variety of duties in the proper order of priority without supervision
• Stamina to handle a large volume of work at a busy desk

 Job Responsibilities:

To provide high-quality public service, handling all routinecirculationprocedures and explainingcirculationpolicies and procedures to the public in a professional manner.  Duties are defined substantially by, but not necessarily limited to, the following:

 Primary Duties:

• Circulate library materials and process returned items
• Collect appropriate fines and fees
• Prepare overdue notices and bills
• Handle all aspects of patron registration including entering patron data in the computer.
• Handle telephone inquiries and route calls as appropriate
• Retrieve book drop when necessary
• Resolve problems related to materials with missing or damaged parts, including searching shelves for missing parts and notifying patrons
• Assist with self checkout
• Assist with copy machines
• Operate a cash register

Baseball

DVD 796.357 Baseball
Baseball is Ken Burns’ first documentary miniseries after his monumental success exploring the Civil War. It takes a close look at how the game has evolved from sandlots into America’s pastime. The depth of Burns’ exploration is impressive, and he doesn’t shy away from the shameful moments in the sport’s history. This documentary, updated for 2010 to contain over 20 hours of video, is a home run for any fan of the game.

Basketball

DVD Hoop
Hoop Dreams looks at two Chicago-area high school basketball players and their goals of attending college on athletic scholarships and later, making it to the NBA. Ultimately, it’s about a lot more than basketball. It’s a story of hope, consequences, inequality of opportunity, disappointment and coming of age.  In 2007, the International Documentary Association (www.documentary.ory) listed Hoop Dreams at the top of its list of the 25 Greatest Documentaries of All Time.

DVD 796.323 No
Director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) returned to the realm of sports documentaries with No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson. This film examines future NBA star Allen Iverson’s involvement in a bowling alley altercation during his high school years which quickly escalated into a racially-charged melee between black and white customers. Iverson and two other young black men went to trial, though none of the white customers involved in the fray were similarly charged. As with Hoop Dreams, James shines a light on American societal problems with sports as a backdrop.

Boxing

DVD Tyson
The biographical documentary Tyson allows boxer Mike Tyson to tell his story in his own words. We learn of his  affection for late trainer Cus D’Amato whom Tyson credits with turning his life around as a troubled youth. The film also touches upon Tyson’s sometimes bizarre behavior, including biting a chunk out of a boxer’s ear in a match. One gets the sense  that the filmmaker feels that Mike Tyson has been so castigated in the press that he deserves an opportunity to reply. The documentary doesn’t preach; it allows viewers to decide what to make of Tyson’s recollections and explanations.

Ken Burns’ Unforgivable Blackness tells the story of boxing phenom Jack Johnson, a larger-than-life personality who became the first black Heavyweight Champion of the World in 1908. His victories over white opponents sent shockwaves through an unprepared American society. Calls for a “great white hope” to unseat Johnson dotted the press, even coming from noted author Jack London (Call of the Wild). Far from retreating from the public eye in the face of animosity, Jack Johnson lived a life unbowed. He spent his free time exactly as he pleased, much to the chagrin of those who felt Johnson was forgetting his proper place in society’s hierarchy.

When We Were Kings recalls the 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle,” a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman set in Zaire. The event, brainchild of a young boxing promoter Don King, also brought in major musical acts like James Brown and B.B. King to enliven the crowd in advance of the bout. Ali, who at 32 was considered a long shot in a young man’s game, became a fan-favorite with his cocky bravado, and Foreman was surprised at the chilly response he received in contrast. Few athletic contests since have garnered the worldwide fanfare as the events documented in When We Were Kings.

Football

DVD 784.83 Band The Band That Wouldn’t Die chronicles the abrupt overnight departure of the Colts NFL team in the 1980s from Baltimore, leaving a stunned and devastated fan base behind. Native Baltimorean Barry Levinson (Diner) directs this film, which takes a sympathetic look at how loyal fans responded to the abandonment, as epitomized by the Colt’s marching band.

DVD 796.332 Small
If you blinked in the mid 1980′s, you may have missed the short-lived United States Football League (USFL), which was only viable for three spring/summer seasons. Small Potatoes: Who Killed the USFL? tries to determine what exactly went wrong. Despite its untimely demise, the film shows the significant impact the USFL had on its much larger rival, the National Football League (NFL).

DVD 796.332 Straight
Rapper and actor Ice Cube brings us Straight Outta L.A., an exploration of how the move of the Raiders football franchise from Oakland to Los Angeles brought an influx of  fans attracted by the Raiders’ bad-boy image, pirate logo  and black color scheme. The film also looks at owner Al Davis’ efforts to move away from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (also home to the USC Trojan football team) to suburban Irwindale in the late 1980s.  The deal fell through, and Davis ultimately took the team back to Oakland.

Hockey

DVD 796.962 Kings
Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky left Edmonton’s Oilers hockey team in 1988 for the Kings franchise in sunny Los Angeles in a huge trade deal. King’s Ransom looks at the effects of the trade on both Edmonton and L.A. and whether, in retrospect, Gretzky felt it was a good decision.

Soccer

DVD 796.334 Two
Colombia has long been associated with illegal drug trafficking, but for a time in 1994, their national soccer team was excelling and heading to the World Cup. The Two Escobars looks at two very different public figures with a last name in common who were associated with soccer in Colombia. The first was Pablo, a notorious drug lord with a passion for soccer, who promoted the sport at all levels in Colombian society, befriended members of the national team and provided cash to support it. The other Escobar (no relation) was Andres, a skilled defender with a bright future in the sport. The Columbian team’s disappointing finish ends in violence for one of the Escobars.

Other Sports

DVD Murderball
Unless you know someone who participates in competitive quadriplegic rugby (quad rugby for short), you may not know what to expect from the film Murderball aside from what meaning you can glean from the documentary’s title. Suffice it to say that quad rugby is not a finesse sport. It’s an extremely physical, cutthroat, quick-paced intense sport populated by athletes clearly accustomed to tough-it-out over significant obstacles. Murderball gives the uninitiated a look inside the sport over the course of several months.

DVD To
Many people group rock climbing with parachuting and bungee jumping as extreme sports only taken on by adrenaline junkies of the first order. Enter Germany’s Huber brothers who, in the film To The Limit, attempt to break the world speed record for climbing Yosemite National Park’s famous granite monolith known as El Capitan (El Cap for short). Typical attempts by seasoned rock climbers to scale El Cap take two or three days, and the Huber brothers were aiming for a time under three hours. The footage is spectacular, and anyone watching can’t help but admire their conditioning, strength, toughness and determination.
