If you’re stuck in a video rut or have nothing to watch this weekend, these lists of hand-selected DVDs may help you find just what you’ve been looking for.

While following the pack is common, not all young people strive to fit in. These movies and television programs depict those who dare to be unique.

DVD Bend
Bend it Like Beckham
Jesminder, a teenaged girl in London, spends her free time playing soccer with boys in the park, but her strict parents believe she should be learning to cook instead (and landing a nice Indian husband while she’s at it). Jules (Keira Knightly) plays for a local girls soccer team and encourages Jesminder to join the squad. It’s just a matter of time before her parents notice her rebellion.

DVD Billy
Billy Elliott
Set in mid-1980s northern England, this film shows eleven-year-old Billy Elliott discovering an unlikely passion-ballet dance. Of course this isn’t well-received in his coal mining family where boxing is seen as a more suitable activity. Billy’s determination to follow his dream despite obstacles is uplifting.

DVD Breakfast
The Breakfast Club
Members of different high school subcultures set aside their differences and find common ground during a weekend detention. The late director John Hughes, who spent his teenaged years in a Chicago suburb, was a master at creating believable teen characters. According to many, this is his masterpiece.

DVD Dead
Dead Poets Society
Robin Williams portrays an inspirational English teacher at a private school in 1950s New England. The teenaged boys under his tutelage are encouraged to think independently and question tradition. Their rebellion causes a stir in a straight-laced culture where conformity is expected.

DVD Dogtown
Dogtown and Z-Boys
This documentary film shows how teenaged surfers in a seedy beachfront Los Angeles neighborhood known as Dogtown revolutionized skateboarding. The Z-Boys (members of the local Zephyr surfing team) brought surfing’s low-slung posture and its counter-culture attitude to the streets of L.A. These disaffected young people dared to be different and ended up influencing generations of skaters to follow.

TV Freak
Freaks and Geeks
This affectionate look at two groups of teenaged outsiders growing up in the 1980s brings us an early peek at Lisa Cardellini (ER), Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) and Jason Segal (How I Met Your Mother.) If you’re nostalgic for 1980s pop culture or had a bumpy ride in high school, you’ll find a lot to like in this one-season comic series.

DVD Girlfight
Girlfight
Michelle Rodriguez has become known for playing tough-as-nails female characters through movies like The Fast and the Furious and Avatar, but the film that put her on the map was Girlfight. She plays a young outsider named Diana constantly in trouble at school. At her local gym she finds that boxing can serve to vent her anger and resentment. Needless to say, she takes verbal abuse from sexist male boxers who question her femininity. Through it all, she remains determined and focused.

DVD Good
Good Will Hunting
A young mathematics whiz from South Boston working as a janitor confronts the derision of arrogant college students and his own self-destructive streak to excel at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote the screenplay for this breakout film, which also starred Robin Williams.

DVD Heathers
Heathers
Teen comedies don’t come much darker than this film, which teams Winona Ryder and Christian Slater with pre-Beverly Hills 90210-era Shannen Doherty. The Heathers in the movie title are an all-powerful clique of snobby girls who sit atop the Westerburg High School social ladder and gleefully terrorize their classmates. Enter disdainful rebel J.D. (portrayed by Slater) who takes Veronica’s disaffection for the Heathers a bit too far with a violent scheme.

DVD Juno
Juno
Ellen Page garnered a best actress Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Juno MacGuff, a witty and offbeat high school student trying to decide what to do with her unborn baby. Teen pregnancy is a difficult subject to approach gracefully, but the clever screenplay makes it work. Juno’s boyfriend, played with sweet naiveté by Michael Cera, matures on screen as his feelings for Juno crystallize.

TV My So
My So-Called Life
This one-season-TV-wonder follows introspective high school sophomore Angela Chase and her motley crew of friends, including wild-child Rayanne and bisexual Rickie. Claire Danes’ emotive portrayal of Angela propelled her toward film stardom, perhaps at the expense of a second season of the program. Slant Magazine calls it “the best teen drama of all time.”

DVD Say
Say Anything
Cameron Crowe directed and wrote this teen drama in which a quirky teenage kickboxing devotee pursues a beautiful and brainy girl on the path to great things after graduation. Ione Skye and John Cusak are very believable as the improbable pair.

DVD Sixteen
Sixteen Candles
This teen comedy classic is John Hughes’ directorial debut. Sixteen Candles introduced America to curly redhead Molly Ringwald, who is more than a little perturbed that her sixteenth birthday arrived without anyone in her family noticing. Meanwhile, she’s infatuated by a senior hunk who won’t give her the time of day. In fact the only person paying attention to her is a talkative and geeky freshman (portrayed with great verve by Anthony Michael Hall.) Ringwald and Hall reunite in The Breakfast Club.

Small Wonders
Unlike most of the films described here, this documentary doesn’t focus on individuals who stand out from their peers. Instead, it depicts a music teacher who inspires public school kids in Harlem to play classical music (for more information on this ongoing program, visit www.opus118.org). After a rocky start, she ultimately touches the lives of scores of young people over several years, who find meaning in what their friends may consider an unusual pursuit. The teacher’s dedication and tenacity attract pay off as she stages a Carnegie Hall performance featuring classical music luminaries Itzhak Perlman and Isaac Stern. This documentary led to the arguably less-engaging drama Music of the Heart starring Meryl Streep.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog

A concierge at an upscale Paris apartment building finds an unlikely bond with a precocious twelve-year-old resident.  Renee’s  philosophical musings and Paloma’s diary entries provide great discussion material.

A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick

A wealthy businessman in nineteenth century Wisconsin advertises for a “reliable wife”; the woman who answers has her own agenda.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn

If the abolition of slavery was the great moral challenge of the 19th century and the struggle against totalitarianism the battle of the 20th century, then the emancipation of women and girls worldwide is the struggle of the 21st.  In vivid prose, two Pulitzer Prize winners make the case that transforming women’s lives can change the world.

Mathilda Savitch by Victor Lodato

In this portrait of grief and imagination, Mathilda negotiates family life and growing up after her sister’s death.  This  intense and darkly funny first novel from playwright Lodato should spark lively discussions.

The Lost Books of the Odyssey by Robert Mason

A collection of short stories and vignettes loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey, the conceit here is that because they began life in the oral tradition, the tales in the Odyssey must have been told in different ways over the years.  This is a great book for the classically inclined discussion group.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Henrietta Lacks, an African-American mother of five, died of cervical cancer in 1951 at age 31.  During her treatment, her doctors took tissue samples without her consent, and those samples have aided in medical discoveries from the polio vaccine to in vitro fertilization.  This absorbing tale humanizes complicated medical and ethical issues that are very much of the moment.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

A surprise bestseller, this story of white women and their black maids in segregated 1960s Mississippi is a must for book clubs.

The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder

This Pulitzer prize winner was Wilder’s second novel and by some accounts his masterpiece.  It is the tale of six interlocking characters whose lives converge in a catastrophic event.

Knitting is a step to a fairer, more sustainable wardrobe. And you can get extra green points by choosing organic, local, fair trade or even recycled yarn. But, first, you have to learn!  We’ll give you the needles, environmentally and the know-how and you’ll walk away with a new skill.

We are going to spend the summer getting ready for the last installment of the Harry Potter films. We will dip into the pensieve and pull out each of the movies in order. For every documentary film like March of the Penguins that catches the public’s imagination, there are dozens of exceptional examples which linger in relative obscurity. Consider setting aside a few hours for these films. It’s time well spent.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil
At first, this film of middle-aged rockers embarking on a European tour seems like a mockumentary in the tradition of This is Spinal Tap, but it’s really a true story. Watch as musicians chase a fading dream in this inspirational and funny film.

DVD DEAR
Dear Zachary: A letter to a Son About His Father
It’s an intriguing premise—a filmmaker decides to make a movie for a childhood friend’s unborn son that shares anecdotes about his dad. Through the course of the film, the nature of the project changes in surprising and significant ways. To say this movie packs a devastating emotional punch is an understatement.

The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara
Former Secretary of Defense McNamara shares some of the wisdom he gained while serving under presidents Kennedy and Johnson during the tumultuous 1960s. Veteran documentary filmmaker Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line) gives McNamara an opportunity to reflect upon his actions in this fascinating film.

The Garden
In the wake of the 1992 Rodney King riots in South Central Los Angeles, a 14 acre community garden was created to help heal wounds. More than ten years of careful cultivation by local residents brought a welcome green landscape and a bounty of fruits and veggies to this urban environment, but a legal action threatens to take it all away. This film covers the struggle of the locals as they fight for the new way of life they’ve come to love.

Grizzly Man
You’re not sure whether to admire or scoff at the amateur grizzly researcher Timothy Treadwell who lives in a tent among the bears of Alaska. Treadwell has an infectious optimism which makes the film enjoyable, but his naiveté ultimately leads to trouble.

It Might Get Loud
Three generations of rock guitarists-Jack White (The White Stripes), The Edge (U2) and elder statesman Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)-have a great time talking shop and jamming on a Warner Bros. sound stage in Burbank. We get glimpses inside their home recording studios as they discuss their individual creative processes. The overall result is entertaining and informative.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
In the 1980s, games like Pac-man, Asteroids and Donkey Kong were all the rage and arcades swallowed the allowances of a generation of teens. As this generation aged, they didn’t necessarily move on to Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. This film details the quest of a Seattle family man attempting to beat the world record for Donkey Kong, long held by video game legend Billy Mitchell. Who knew that arcade games would spawn such a competitive and factious subculture?

Stranded : The Andes Crash Survivors in Their Own Words
You’re probably familiar with the 1993 drama Alive starring Ethan Hawke which chronicles the rugby-team survivors of a 1972 plane crash in the Andes. This documentary interviews survivors of that real-world crash and organizes an emotional trip back to the site with their family members. The harrowing events recalled by the survivors in this film, especially those surrounding cannibalism, are sensitively handled.

Street Fight
Upstart Corey Booker tries to break into New Jersey politics by running for mayor of Newark. He’s got an uphill battle in unseating entrenched multi-term incumbent Sharpe James, who fights the young Ivy Leaguer with every tool at his disposal. It’s an engrossing story of an intense political battle taken to the streets of New Jersey.

Waco: The Rules of Engagement
The 1993 siege and subsequent raid on the Waco compound of David Koresh and his group of followers by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF)  electrified the nation. As a spellbound television audience watched, fire broke out amid gunfire, and 26 members of the group died, including Koresh and several children. This documentary takes a new look at the evidence to see whether Federal agents acted appropriately and if violence could have been avoided.

Who Killed the Electric Car?
Environmentally conscious all-electric cars like the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf are on the horizon in response to consumer demand. It may surprise you to learn that hundreds of Californians were driving leased General Motors electric cars in the late 1990s. Why don’t you still see these revolutionary cars on the streets? It’s because GM decided to discontinue the vehicle after about three years. This film looks into how this decision affected the devoted drivers of the cars, and what factors led to the demise of the program.

Young@Heart
The Young@Heart Chorus is no ordinary performing troupe. They are a group of active senior citizens (one as old as 92) who share a love of music and performance. Their considerable talents and enthusiasm are harnessed by charismatic musical director Bob Cilman. But rather than singing show tunes and standards, Cilman entices them to embrace a wide variety of popular music—from James Brown to Coldplay. Getting to know the members of the choir via this film is a real treat.

Reading Rants Summer 2009

Interested in helping serve our community? There are many ways in which you may be able to put your energy and talents to good use!

Adult Volunteers:

Got a special skill or talent that you would be willing to teach to others? We know our community is filled with talented people. We are looking for people who work in an interesting field, have passions for particular hobbies, or have skills that others would love to learn. If you are one of those people, then the Library would be the perfect place for you to teach or tutor!

The Library also has occasional needs throughout the year for volunteers to help with special events, book sale items, shelf-reading, homebound delivery and other library tasks. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, please fill out a volunteer application form and mail or return to Tobe Liebert, volunteer coordinator, at tliebert@hinsdalelibrary.info.  Click here to view and print the adult volunteer form.

Volunteers: Grades 6 - 12

Do you have special skills or talents that you would like to share with the Library? Do you need service hours toward confirmation, Scouts, National Honor Society, class assignments or for job experience and college applications?  Want to give back to the community and have fun, too? Then come to the Youth & Young Adult Services Department. A variety of opportunities are listed below.

Volunteers during the school year will assist with program preparation, creation of book lists, fliers or posters, organizing library materials, book displays, and other special projects. Those interested in volunteering during the school year can fill out an application and email or turn it in to the Youth and Young Adult Services Desk. Please be specific about the number of hours required, your availability and the deadline for you to complete the service.  Click here to view and print the Youth Services volunteer application.

Applications for summer volunteers are available now.  Volunteers may choose to be a reading buddy, assist with summer reading club registration or assist with children and family programs. Please read the descriptions below, click on the volunteer type you are interested in, print and fill out form, and return it to the Youth & Young Adult Services desk.

Registration desk volunteers help readers sign up for our reading club, hand-out logs and check-in progress, and are assigned one two-hour shift. You may register for time in June or July or both months. Registration Desk volunteers must be at least entering 6th grade. Print Registration Desk volunteer form. PLEASE NOTE: Deadline extended.

Book Buddies is a one-week program that gives teens and beginning readers the opportunity to share books and the fun of reading. Book Buddies meet for 3 days for 30 minutes each and buddies are expected to attend all three sessions. Senior Buddies are entering Grades 6 and up. Learn about being a Senior Buddy here (and keep this form to remind you of the dates and times you signed up for). Then print the Senior Buddy registration form and return it to the Youth & Young Adult Services Department. Assistant Directors (Grade 9 and up) help run Book Buddy sessions. Get further information and sign up using the Senior Buddy application form.  PLEASE NOTE: Deadline extended from June 1 to June 7.

Community Service volunteers:

Under certain conditions, the Library accepts volunteers who are required to complete community service hours by the local court system or through a school district’s peer jury program. Completing your community service hours at the library depends on your individual circumstances and the availability of work during the time frame for completion of the required hours.

For music lovers there is no better place to be than Chicago in the Summer.  Many of Chicago’s music festivals and concerts are free or have a minimal attendance fee. Almost every musical genre will be represented over the course of the summer at various festivals, street fairs and concerts.  Don’t forget to check the HPL music collection to bone up on your favorite band’s lyrics before you attend the concert or to preview their latest CD before you buy it.

To reserve a study room, simply contact the appropriate public service desk:

• First Floor (adult) Study Rooms: contact the Reference and Adult Services Desk 630-986-1976 ext. 239 or via email reference@hinsdalelibrary.info.
• Lower Level (youth) Study Rooms: contact the Youth and Young Adult Services Desk 630-986-1976 ext. 501 or via email youth@hinsdalelibrary.info.

• Users of the First Floor Study Rooms are guaranteed a two hour block of time, while Lower Level Study Room users are guaranteed one hour. Walk-up patrons are accommodated on a first-come-first-served basis subject to availability.
• Patrons may reserve study rooms up to seven days in advance, though they may request a reservation only three times during that period.
• Patrons may use a Study Room once per day (regardless of walk-up or reservation).
• Each room supports a maximum of four people.
• As Study Rooms are a scarce resource, patrons are expected to occupy the rooms during their allocated blocks of time. Patrons who leave the rooms vacant for more than 15 minutes are subject to the forfeiture of their remaining time and/or removal of their personal belongings to accommodate waiting patrons.
• The use of our study rooms is governed by the Study Room Policy, which includes a provision prohibiting commercial use.

If you’re an adult woman under 50 in the U.S., chances are decent that you’ve either read this novel about 12-year-old Margaret and her journey into puberty, or know someone who has. Girls everywhere can relate with Margaret’s anxieties about cute boys, friendships and her changing body. Its depiction of puberty from Margaret’s perspective has been controversial in some circles, causing it to come under fire in several school libraries since its release in 1970.

Our Bodies, Ourselves by Boston Women’s Health Collective (613.04244/OUR)
This book first published in the early 1970s has been the go-to guide for generations of women regarding their health and sexuality. Plain-speaking, written from a female perspective and avoiding the condescending tone of many books of the genre at the time, Our Bodies, Ourselves has helped countless women make more informed medical decisions.

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson (632.9/CAR)
The unanticipated environmental consequences of using chemical pesticides are highlighted in this seminal 1962 work which ultimately led to the banning of DDT in the United States. In addition, many Americans were inspired to join in the budding environmental movement.

The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan (396/FRI)
This 1963 book theorized that societal pressure for American women to fill traditional roles like homemaker and mother led to unhappiness, as careers and educational opportunities were sacrificed. This book influenced many to join the new women’s movement and led to soul searching among countless others as they took stock of the direction of their lives.

Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin (301.451/GRI)
Griffin, a middle-aged white journalist, experiences life as a black man in 1959 after dying his skin and travelling through the Deep South. His account of racism galvanized previously unaware citizens into joining the burgeoning civil rights movement.

Roots by Alex Haley (929.2/HAL)
Before the blockbuster television miniseries hit the airwaves, Haley’s book, which traced his ancestry back to Africa, caused quite a stir. Though his research methods have since come into question, there’s no denying the cultural impact of Roots, which ignited interest in amateur genealogy in the American public.

The Federalist Papers by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay (342.73/FED)
Written by three of our founding fathers to convince the State of New York to ratify the constitution, this set of essays effectively laid out the case for a stronger federal government. Aside from serving their stated purpose, The Federalist Papers give us valuable insight into why our government has its current form.

On the Road by Jack Kerouac (F/KEROUAC, J.)
Ever thought of hopping into a car for a wild and crazy road adventure? It might not have occurred to you if Kerouac hadn’t penned his classic mostly-autobiographical 1950s novel of the road which has since become a part of American popular culture.

Sexual Behavior in the Human Male by Alfred Kinsey (392.6/KIN)
This eyebrow-raising 1948 book represents the culmination of an extensive survey project of sexuality in American men. The results regarding the frequency of sex outside of marriage and homosexual behavior were considered scandalous for the time. This book sparked a lot of conversation about a formerly taboo subject in the general public.

On Death and Dying by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (155.937/KUB)
This influential book describing how people cope with the passing of terminally ill loved ones has enlightened counselors and doctors, comforted the grieving and dying and became part of our culture in the process.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (F/RAND, A)
Despite its daunting length (1,000+ pages), this novel has attracted legions of new readers each year since its original release in 1957. Rand skewers big government and espouses the virtues of capitalism through her heroic businessman character John Galt. The views of many conservatives and libertarians in America have been shaped by Atlas Shrugged and its advocacy of laissez-faire government policy regarding business.

Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser (394.1097/SCH)
The seamy underbelly of America’s enormous fast food industry is revealed in this book. Schlosser leaves us with disturbing indelible mental images of how cattle are processed into hamburgers. The attitudes, if not eating habits of millions have been influenced by this book.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair (F/SINCLAIR, U)
This muckraking novel depicts the life of a hardworking immigrant meatpacker in Chicago. The abysmal factory conditions and management’s callous indifference to food contamination in the book caused a public sensation which ultimately led to government regulation of food safety.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (F/STOWE)
Perhaps more than any other American book, this 1852 novel changed the course of our history. It called attention to the plight of southern black slaves and propelled the country inexorably toward the Civil War by inflaming and mobilizing abolitionists. Abraham Lincoln reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war? ” to Stowe upon meeting her at the White House.

Walden by Henry David Thoreau (818.3/THO)
Thoreau’s two-year sojourn in a self-made cabin at Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts is chronicled in this work, which also serves to illustrate his philosophical views. Even though it was first published in 1854, readers of every era since have been moved by its advocacy for living simply and its respect for the beauty of nature.

Graphic novels for kids are making a come-back, big time.  They’re lauded for appealing to multiple intelligences at once, bringing art and words together, and capturing the imagination of young readers. Our collection includes stories about superheroes, science fiction adventures, re-imagined classics like Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, original works and Manga (popular Japanese style). The Library houses collections in the youth, teen and adult departments. School Services Librarian

Friendly, motivated, highly organized and creative individual wanted to build upon

an already strong menu of services to local schools.  Aside from collection development and reference desk duties, the School Services Librarian will work directly with local MRC directors, plan and implement services to students, teachers and parents, and serve as the website coordinator for the department. This challenging position also involves assisting with library outreach activities, booktalking, and serving on staff committees. Strong Readers Advisory skills a plus. The successful candidate will have 1-3 years experience in a library or educational setting, knowledge of youth and young adult literature, an interest in working with all ages, and be eager to join this supportive 9-member team in a recently renovated building.

One evening per week and weekend rotation.

$38,000 DOQ. MLS/ALA or Teaching Certificate
