Sunday Hours Adjusted

Beginning on January 22 (the weekend after Finals Service), the Library will be open from 12:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. on Sundays throughout the year. We extended our Sunday hours two years ago, expecting to serve families and last-minute homework finishers. Unfortunately, Sunday evenings were the least frequented of any of our evening hours. Looking at our door count and circulation statistics, we saw a “dinner time” drop off that never picked up. We know there’s a need for those late afternoon hours, and we also know that we see people lined up outside our doors every Sunday afternoon. To meet this need, the Library will now be open throughout the year when there is the most demand for our spaces, services and collections.

Capturing Beauty with Your Camera by
K. James Kropp

Quiet Reading Room
January 7-March 2

Jim Kropp, photographer, videographer, producer and author, has developed many ideas and techniques over the years for creating beautiful photographs. In 2010, after a cruise to Italy and Sicily, he published Capturing Beauty with Your Camera, in which his ideas on photography are distilled into 10 tips, illustrated with photographs from his travels.  An exhibit of his work will be on display in the Library’s Quiet Reading Room through March 2, 2012. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours.

The Big Read 2012: The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

The Big Read is celebrating its eighth season this spring with Paula McLain’s bestseller, The Paris Wife, with book discussions, programs and a visit from the author. The Big Read is a collaborative project of the Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Indian Prairie, La Grange, La Grange Park, Lisle, Thomas Ford, Westmont and Woodridge public libraries with the goal of building community by promoting reading.

The Paris Wife is a deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, which captures a remarkable time period – Paris in the 1920s – and the extraordinary love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley Richardson.

Visit one of the participating libraries to borrow a copy of the book. Programs will begin in March 2012.

Kids Read 2012

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick has been selected as the title for the second annual Kids Read community reading program. (Martin Scorsese’s recently released film Hugo is based on the book!) Programs will be planned for March 2012. For now, pick up a copy of this Caldecott Award winning novel about twelve-year-old Hugo, an orphan living and repairing clocks within the walls of a Paris train station in 1931, who meets a mysterious toyseller and his goddaughter, which jeopardizes his undercover life and his biggest secret.

Thank you for making the Library your community destination,

Karen Kleckner Keefe, Executive Director
